Independent play is an important part of a child’s development and should be encouraged throughout your daily routine. I love doing crafts with Roo. We try to find time to do some kind of arts and crafts project twice or more a week. But I have my own grown-up crafts I like to spend time on too. A busy three year old with a short attention span makes it hard to find time and space to do my own projects. Here’s how I use independent play time to find time for my own crafts.

I love a good book, but carving out time to read a physical book isn’t high on my priorities. I prefer listening to audiobooks during my work commute! Bubble baths bore me. A Toy Timeout Box is exactly as it sounds, a box I put toys in when Roo misbehaves. It sits in an out of reach place that is still visible as a reminder to act better for the rest of the day. The next morning…
Each item is color coded with tabs so I can flip to them easily. The post it notes and banners have been used for information that changes. For example, my cleaning schedule includes when I last did things like bathed the dog or changed the sheets. The post it banner holds that date and can be replaced when I do it next.
